Tigers Soccer Looks For Six-Straight Win Against Troy State

BATON ROUGE — The LSU soccer team has not allowed a goal in more than four games and will look to win its sixth-consecutive contest on Sunday, as the Tigers host the Troy State Trojans at 2 p.m. at the LSU Soccer Complex.

“We’re looking forward to playing at home again,” said LSU head coach George Fotopoulos. “Our team tends to show a certain level of inspiration when playing in front of the home crowd and we have great fans. The team is excited about the game against Troy State on Sunday.”

LSU enters Sunday’s non-conference matchup with an overall record of 6-1.

The Tigers’ lone loss of the season came against 23rd-ranked Miami, 1-0, at the Seminole Invitational. Since then, LSU has reeled off five-consecutive victories including four-straight shutouts.

The Trojans come to Baton Rouge with a 1-5 overall record after having their match against Belmont postponed on Friday. Shortly before the end of the first half, a severe lightening storm in the Nashville area caused the officials to call the game with the score knotted at 0-0. The Atlantic Sun contest will be made up later in the season.

Troy State is winless on the road this year, while the Tigers have not been defeated at home since Oct. 7, 2001. The Trojans have been defeated in road games against Western Carolina, 3-0, and Chattanooga, 2-1, this season.

Sunday’s game will only be the second time that LSU and Troy State have faced off against each other. In Fotopoulos’ first game at the helm of the LSU soccer program, he and his team traveled to Troy, Ala., and defeated the Trojans, 4-0, at the 500-seat Troy Sportsplex.

The resounding victory proved to be the first of Fotopoulos’ LSU career and the win propelled the Tigers to a school-record 15-6 overall record in 2000.

“This Troy State team is going to come in here ready to play,” Fotopoulos said. “They have a new coach this year and he’s going to have his team disciplined and ready to compete.”

Sunday’s matchup against Troy State is being promoted as the McDonald’s Rodeo Roundup and the first 100 fans at the LSU Soccer Complex will receive cowboy hats courtesy of the LSU marketing department.
