BATON ROUGE — The LSU coaching staff has singled out freshman offensive tackle Andrew Whitworth, junior defensive tackle Chad Lavalais and junior defensive back Randall Gay as the Tigers’ players of the week following the 26-8 loss to Virginia Tech on Sunday.
Whitworth, who was playing in his first collegiate game, started and played all 66 snaps on offense for the Tigers. Whitworth graded out at 89 percent and had only one missed assignment and allowed just one sack in the contest.
Lavalais recorded a career-best 11 tackles, had one sack and another tackle for a loss and recovered one fumble. Lavalais also had three quarterback pressures for the Tigers as the LSU defense allowed only 231 yards of total offense to the Hokies in the contest.
Gay was named LSU’s special teams player of the week for his performance on both the punt and kickoff teams. Gay finished with five tackles, one coming on special teams.
