BLOOMFIELD TOWNSHIP, Mich. — On Tuesday at the U.S. Amateur Golf Championship, LSU sophomore Heath West shot even-par 70 for the second straight day to finish in a 13-way tie for 15th place after two rounds of stroke play and advance to the 64-player match-play tournament that begins Wednesday at the South Course at Oakland Hills Country Club.
West’s total of 140 was five stokes behind Bill Haas, the 20-year-old son of PGA Tour pro Jay Haas, who shot a 2-under-par 68 on Tuesday to earn the 36-hole medalist honors. Haas, from Greer, S.C., finished with a 5-under-par total of 135, two strokes better than five others.
At 7:40 a.m. CDT, West will take on Jason Powell of Loudon, Tenn., who shot 1-over 141 in stroke play. Powell, a three-year letterwinner at the University of Tennessee, completed his eligibility with the Vols this past spring with a 74.44 stroke average.
After two days of stroke play at the South and North Courses at Oakland Hills for 312 golfers, the cut was made at 3-over-par 143, with 17 players in a playoff for the final 13 spots in the match play field. The playoff will continue Wednesday at 8:00 a.m., with four players remaining for two spots.
LSU senior John Humphries failed to make the cut, shotting a two-round total of 13-over 153 (76-77) to finish in a tie for 226th place.
The Championship runs through Sundays 36-hole final match, with the winner earning a spot in next years U.S. Open.
