ESPN Classic to Air Great Moments in LSU Athletics

BATON ROUGE — Sunday is LSU day on ESPN Classic, as the network will air eight consecutive hours of some of the greatest moments in LSU Athletics history.

Cox Cable channel 4 in Baton Rouge will air the broadcast, as well as ESPN Classic’s digital cable station (Ch. 245).

The day starts off at 11 a.m. with 1991 College World Series highlights, the year in which the Tigers captured the first of five national titles under Skip Bertman. LSU posted a 6-3 win over Wichita State in the national championship game.

At 11:30 a.m., the 1993 College World Series highlights will be featured. The Tigers, behind a masterful pitching performance from Brett Laxton, shutout Wichita State, 8-0, to claim their second national title. In the championship game, Laxton allowed only three hits, while striking out 16 batters.

From Noon to 2 p.m., LSU’s 28-21 upset of No. 1 ranked Florida will be shown as the goal posts in Tiger Stadium came down for the first time in the 1997 Tiger victory. In that game, quarterback Herb Tyler rushed for a pair of touchdowns and cornerback Cedric Donaldson intercepted two passes, returning one 31 yards early in the fourth quarter for a score. The win marked the first time in school history that LSU beat a team ranked No. 1 in the nation by the Associated Press.

At 2 p.m., ESPN Classic will show the highest combined scoring basketball game in school history in LSU’s 148-141 overtime win over Loyola-Marymount in 1990. In that game, Chris Jackson scored 34 points and Shaquille O’Neal, then just a freshman for the Tigers, had 20 points, 24 rebounds and 12 blocked shots in the LSU win. Not to be outdone, the late Hank Gathers scored 48 points and grabbed 13 rebounds for the Lions, while Bo Kimble added 32 points and 11 boards.

Starting at 5 p.m., LSU’s 6-5 national championship baseball win over Stanford will be aired. The title was the fifth and final championship for the Tigers under Bertman and one of the most amazing come-from-behind wins in College World Series history.

Trailing 5-2 heading into the eighth inning, LSU responded with three runs in the bottom of the eighth to tie the game at 5-5. Brad Cresse, in his lat at-bat in an LSU uniform, singled home Ryan Theriot in the bottom of the ninth inning for a 6-5 LSU victory.

ESPN Classic then caps off LSU Day at 6 p.m. with a SportsCentury tribute to Pete Maravich, the most prolific scorer in the history of college basketball.
