Southard Named to NCAA Gymnastics Committee

BATON ROUGE — The NCAA Division I Championship/Competition Cabinet announced that LSU Associate Athletic Director/Senior Women’s Administrator Judy Southard has been appointed a member of the NCAA Women’s Gymnastics Committee.

The Committee oversees all aspects of the sport in relation to the NCAA Championships. Southard’s four-year term of office begins on Sept. 1 of this year and runs through 2006.

“I consider it both an honor to serve on an NCAA Committee and I particularly look forward to working with the gymnastics committee members and our coaches for the betterment of the sport,” Southard said. “The SEC is fortunate to have a heavy presence on the national scene as our member institutions are committed to excellence in their gymnastics programs.

Hopefully I can make a positive contribution to the development of policies and procedures governing the administration of our SEC and NCAA gymnastics championships.

Before coming to LSU, Southard was the Director of Athletics at Texas Woman’s University (1992-2001). TWU hosted the 1994 and 1995 USA Gymnastics Collegiate National Championships in which Southard was the Meet Director.

She also served on the USA Gymnastics Committee from 1994 to 1999.

She has also served on the NCAA Division II Women’s Basketball Committee from 1997-2001, chairing the committee in 2000 and 2001. During the same time period she also served on the NCAA Post Graduate Scholarship Selection Committee for District 6.

Most recently, she was the Meet Director in Baton Rouge earlier this year as LSU hosted the NCAA Gymnastics Central Regional Championship meet.
