BATON ROUGE, La. — Four LSU players were selected Tuesday during the first day of the 2002 Major League Baseball draft. Twenty-two rounds of the draft were completed on Tuesday, and the draft will conclude on Wednesday with 28 more rounds.
LSU players selected on Tuesday included senior outfielder Sean Barker (sixth round, 171st pick) by the Colorado Rockies, junior right-handed pitcher Bo Pettit (13th round, 392nd pick) by the Minnesota Twins, junior left-handed pitcher Brad David (17th round, 515th pick) by the Atlanta Braves and junior third baseman Wally Pontiff (21st round, 638th pick) by the Oakland Athletics.
Four LSU signees were also selected on Tuesday, including shortstop Micah Schilling of Silliman Institute in Clinton, La. (1st round, 41st pick, Cleveland Indians); left-handed pitcher Kyle Pawelczyk of Chipola (Fla.) Junior College (3rd round, 84th pick, Anaheim Angels); right-handed pitcher Matt Capps of Alexander High School in Douglasville, Ga. (7th round, 193rd pick, Pittsburgh Pirates); and first baseman Josh Kreuzer of West Valley (Calif.) Junior College (16th round, 472nd pick, Texas Rangers).
