BATON ROUGE — LSU track and field All-Americans Walter Davis and Muna Lee were honored by the United States Track Coaches Association South Central men’s and women’s Athletes of the Year, it was announced Tuesday.
Davis and Lee both earned the honor for the second consecutive year.
Davis has gone undefeated in the both the triple and long jumps during the outdoor season and is among a short list of favorites to win both titles at the NCAA Championships in Baton Rouge this week.
Lee was the SEC champion in the 100-meter dash and leads the nation in the 200-meter dash going into this weekend’s NCAA Championship meet. In addition, she became the first woman since former LSU great Cheryl Taplin in 1993 and 1994 to win consecutive Penn Relays titles.
The sophomore has twice been honored as the SEC Women’s Athlete of the Week and during the indoor season she was the SEC Women’s Athlete of the Year as she helped the Lady Tigers’ to their ninth NCAA Indoor team title.
Davis will try to help the Tigers to their first NCAA Outdoor crown in 12 years this weekend, as the men enter with the No. 2 ranking, while Lee and the fourth-ranked Lady Tigers will try to take home their 13th title in 16 years.
