Colosio Falls in Second Round of NCAA Tournament

PALO ALTO, Calif. — After handily defeating 11th-ranked Sarah Riske in the opening round of the NCAA Women’s Tennis Singles Championships, LSU’s Bruna Colosio fell to Arizona State’s No. 17 Adria Engel, 2-6, 6-2, 6-2, in the second round of action here at the Taube Family Tennis Stadium in Palo Alto, Calif.

With her 6-2, 6-3 victory over Vanderbilt’s Riske in the first round of the prestigious season-ending tournament, Colosio moved into a three-way tie for eighth place on LSU’s all-time win list with former Lady Tiger greats Ana Paula Mores and Sarah Stewart. The win proved to the 97th victory of Colosio’s illustrious four-year career as she accumulated an impressive 97-28 singles record.

Colosio, the Lady Tigers’ three-time All-American from Cascaval, Brazil, also left her mark on the LSU record book on Tuesday as she ended her four-year career with a career winning percentage of .776. The mark surpassed Dana De Watlington’s previous record of .762. Watlington, LSU’s winningest women’s tennis player of all-time competed for the Lady Tigers from 1984-87.

In her second-round contest against Engel, Colosio jumped out to a solid one-set lead before fatigue set in and Engel rallied to a 2-6, 6-2, 6-2 victory.

With the win, Engel moves on to third round of competition where she will face the winner of Tuesday’s late afternoon match between Virginia Commonwealth’s Andrea Ondrisova and Furman’s Megan Dunigan. The third-round of competition will begin on Wednesday at 9 a.m.

Colosio and teammate Rocio Fantilli will begin play in the 2002 NCAA Doubles Championships on Wednesday, as the Lady Tigers’ 19th-ranked pair is scheduled to face off against UCLA’s fifth-ranked combination of Megan Bradley and Lauren Fisher at 3:30 p.m. (CST).
