Colosio Begins Play in NCAA Singles Championships

PALO ALTO, Calif. — All of the first round matches of the NCAA Women’s Tennis Singles Championships were washed out on Monday, as an incessant rain storm swept through Palo Alto, Calif., on the campus of Stanford University.

The 32 first round matches will be made up early Tuesday morning with the second round contests waiting until late afternoon. LSU’s 40th-ranked Bruna Colosio is scheduled to play Vanderbilt’s 9-16 seeded Sarah Riske at 11 a.m. (CDT).

The counterparts began Monday’s first round match at noon before rain washed out the contest at approximately 12:30 p.m. Riske owned a slim 3-2 lead in the match with Colosio serving to even the score at 3-3.

Colosio, the Lady Tigers’ three-time All-American, defeated then seventh-ranked Riske in a dual match with Vanderbilt on March 29 by a score of 6-4, 6-7 (3), 6-4.

After overcoming injuries that slowed her during the fall of 2001, Colosio won 11 of her final 12 matches between March 19 and May 11 to lead the Lady Tigers back to the NCAA Women’s Tennis Team Championships.

Riske, a sophomore from McMurray, Pa., is currently ranked 12th in the ITA rankings. She holds a 23-8 overall record but has lost back-to-back matches in the SEC and NCAA team tournaments.

Colosio will also compete in the NCAA Double Championship with teammate Rocio Fantilli beginning Wednesday.
