LSU Dominates All-State Tennis Honors

BATON ROUGE — LSU and Tulane dominated the annual Louisiana Sports Writers Association tennis awards, which were announced Saturday.

For the Tigers, Jeff Brown took home Coach of the Year honors for the men’s team while Jason Hazley and Cory Ross were named Freshman and Newcomer of the Year, respectively. On the women’s side, Bruna Colosio was named Player of the Year.

Meanwhile, Tulane’s Michael Kogan earned men’s Player of the Year honors while David Schumacher was named the women’s Coach of the Year and Maria Ivanov took home Freshman of the Year honors.

The only major award not to go to a player from LSU or Tulane was the women’s Newcomer of the Year, which McNeese State’s Yvonne Bresler won.

Brown takes home the Coach of the Year award for the second straight season after guiding LSU to the second round of the NCAA Tournament. The Tigers were forced to replace three starters entering the year and made a late season push to reach the tournament.

Likewise, the Coach of the Year award is Schumacher’s second straight. He led Tulane to a 15-12 mark and a third place finish in the Conference USA Tournament.

Kogan was last year’s Freshman of the Year and makes his second appearance on the first team. Teammates Victor Romero, who was last year’s Newcomer of the Year, and Mattias Westerberg joined Kogan on the first team this season.

The Tulane trio was joined on the first team by a trio of Tigers, Dan Kiernan, Hazley and Peter Richman. Including the second team, a total of six LSU men’s players were recognized. Ross, Bryan Fisher and Sebastian Rutka were named to the second team.

Colosio won her second consecutive Player of the Year award after finishing the year ranked 40th in the nation and compiling a 17-8 record, including six wins over ranked opponents.

Colosio was joined on the first team by Patricia Osedumme of New Orleans, Ivanov, Maria Mazinova of Tulane, Julie Morris of Tulane and Debora Montero of McNeese State.
