BATON ROUGE — LSU All-American Muna Lee was honored by the Southeastern Conference as its co-Female Indoor Track Athlete of the Year, it was announced. The sophomore shared the award with Elva Goulbourne of Auburn.
Lee won the NCAA title in the 200-meter dash in an LSU record time of 22.82 seconds, the second fastest time in NCAA history, helping the Lady Tigers to their ninth NCAA Indoor team title. In addition, Lee finished third in the 60-meter dash and helped the Lady Tigers to a third place finish in the 4×400-meter relay.
At the SEC Indoor Championships, Lee swept the sprints, taking both the 60 and 200-meter titles, becoming the first woman to do so since former LSU great Peta-Gaye Dowdie in 2000.
Lee went undefeated against NCAA competition in the 200-meter dash during the indoor season while going undefeated in the 60-meter dash until the NCAA final in the event.
After winning the SEC Indoor Freshman of the Year honor last year, Lee is the first LSU woman since Daphnie Saunders in 1994 to win the Female Indoor Track Athlete of the Year award.
LaShinda Demus of South Carolina was named Female Freshman of the Year, while Tom Jones of Florida was named SEC Coach of the Year on the women?s side.
SEC and NCAA Indoor champion Tennessee dominated the men?s awards. NCAA 60 and 200-meter champion Justin Gatlin was named Male Track Athlete of the Year, while Marc Sylvester garnered the men?s newcomer award. Bill Webb was honored as the SEC Coach of the Year on the men?s side.
