Soccer Teams Earns CHAMPS Community Service Award

BATON ROUGE — The LSU soccer team garnered the CHAMPS Community Service Award for the 2001-02 season announced head coach George Fotopoulos on Wednesday. The prestigious honor is awarded annually to the LSU team that works the hardest toward helping the community.

“I feel that this is the greatest honor that we have obtained as a team since I have been at LSU,” said head coach Fotopoulos. “I am very honored that our team was recognized for this award and I think that it is wonderful that our girls are dedicated to helping out the community. It is not something that they had to do, but they went out and gave 100 percent this year.”

LSU’s freshman soccer player, Artie Brown, earned the individual CHAMPS Community Service Award for being the LSU athlete that dedicated the most of his or her time towards helping out the community. She became the first soccer player to earn the distinction.

The LSU soccer team will open its 2002 season on Aug. 31, as the Tigers travel to Nacogdoches, Texas, for a non-conference contest against Stephen F. Austin at 1 p.m.
