Softball Splits Marathon Doubleheader With Alabama

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — After a grueling 11-inning 1-0 loss in the first game, the LSU softball bounced back to pound the Crimson Tide, 9-1, in five innings in a Southeastern Conference doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at the Alabama Softball Complex.

The loss in the first game of the split ended the Tigers (31-8, 16-3 SEC) 10-game winning streak and the loss in the second game ended Alabama’s (33-12, 14-3 SEC) 15-game winning streak. The pair will play the final game of the series on Sunday at 1 p.m. The game will be broadcast on Fox Sports Southwest, Baton Rouge cable channel 37.

“We have now lost two games to Alabama and allowed only two hits in both of those games,” said LSU head coach Yvette Girouard. “To Alabama’s credit, they made all the plays they needed to make defensively and they deserved to get the win in the first game.

“Going into the second game, our players knew what was at stake. We still have a lot of softball to play, but we couldn’t afford to drop two games to Alabama and lose any ground. Our bats finally exploded and we got nine runs on 12 hits and didn’t make any errors.”

Kristin Schmidt got the win in game two, throwing the five-inning complete game two-hitter. She allowed one run while striking out two and not giving up a walk to improve her record to 11-3 overall and 5-2 in the SEC.

“We just didn’t get a break in the first game,” said Girouard. “Of course, we didn’t make our own breaks. We got a Peel home run called back in the third inning and that hurts.”
