Davis Named SEC Track Athlete of the Week

BATON ROUGE — LSU All-American Walter Davis has been the SEC Men’s Track and Field Athlete of the Week, it was announced Wednesday afternoon.

Davis won the long jump at the Tom Tellez Invitational with an NCAA automatic mark of 26 feet 9 inches. The mark ranks second in the nation during the early stages of the outdoor season.

In addition, the 2000 Olympian made his first appearance on the track in an LSU uniform. Davis ran the opening leg of the Tigers’ 4×100-meter relay team that ran an NCAA automatic qualifying time of 38.97 seconds to win.

The time is the fastest in the nation this year and was the Tigers’ first sub-39-second time since setting the school record at the 1998 NCAA Outdoor Championships.

Davis will run on the 4×100-meter relay squad this weekend as well as compete in both the long and triple jumps at the Texas Relays this weekend. Davis is the defending NCAA and Texas Relays champion in the triple jump and is undefeated against collegiate competition in the event in his two years at LSU.
