Colosio Named SEC Tennis Player of the Week

BATON ROUGE — LSU women’s tennis player, Bruna Colosio, was named the Southeastern Conference Player of the Week on Wednesday announced the SEC league office in Birmingham, Ala.

“Bruna has been fantastic since the day that she stepped on this campus,” said LSU head coach Tony Minnis. “Early on in the season, she struggled a little bit, because she was coming off of a serious injury, but now she’s playing at the level that she’s used to. The kid’s got great heart and she’s just a competitor.”

Colosio, the 2001 SEC Player of the Year, earned the conference’s weekly award by knocking off two of the nation’s top-50 players. On Friday, the Lady Tiger senior dropped Vanderbilt’s seventh-ranked Sarah Riske, 6-4, 6-7(3), 6-4, before downing Kentucky’s Carolina Mayorga on Monday.

Her crucial 7-5, 6-1 win over Mayorga in Monday’s SEC contest anchored the Lady Tigers’ 4-3 upset victory against 13th-ranked Kentucky. The win was Colosio’s fifth-in-a-row and upped her overall record on the season to 11-7.

“Bruna is about as good of a collegiate player as you’re going to see and I’m extremely happy for every award that she gets,” Minnis said.

Colosio, who is currently the 65th-ranked singles player in the nation, is a three-time All-American and finished last season ranked No. 11 in the country. She owns an impressive 98-30 career record and is the eighth-winningest women’s tennis player in LSU history.

The LSU women’s tennis team, led by Colosio, will next be in action on Friday as the Lady Tigers face the Mississippi State Lady Bulldogs at 2 p.m. on the road in Starkville, Miss.
