BATON ROUGE — The LSU women’s tennis team looks to build from its 5-2 victory over Tulsa on Wednesday as the Lady Tigers host the Alabama Crimson Tide on Sunday at 1 p.m. at the W.T. “Dub” Robinson Tennis Stadium.
“It was good for our team to gain a bit of confidence with a big win over Tulsa,” said LSU head coach Tony Minnis. “Now, we just need to use that momentum against a very good Alabama team on Sunday. Our players are competing better now and they realize how important the Alabama match is for them.”
LSU heads into Sunday’s Southeastern Conference matchup with an overall record of 8-7 on the season and an 0-5 mark in conference play. The Lady Tigers’ five SEC losses have all come against top-notch opponents in No. 1 Georgia, No. 3 Florida, No. 9 Tennessee, No. 23 South Carolina and 32nd-ranked Auburn.
The Crimson Tide rolls into Baton Rouge with an 11-4 overall record on the season and a 2-3 mark versus conference opponents. Alabama earned wins over SEC foes Arkansas and Mississippi State this season and have recorded losses against conference rivals Georgia, Tennessee and Ole Miss. The Crimson Tide breezed by Coastal Carolina, 7-0, in a non-conference match on Friday.
In last season’s annual contest between the two schools, LSU dropped the Crimson Tide, 5-2, at home in Baton Rouge. With the win, the Lady Tigers accumulated their seventh-consecutive victory over Alabama. LSU has not lost a match against the Crimson Tide since 1994 when Alabama upended the Lady Tigers, 6-2, in Tuscaloosa, Ala. LSU leads the all-time series, 21-6.
