Track & Field to Play Host to SEC Three-Way Meet

BATON ROUGE — The LSU track and field team welcomes conference rivals Georgia and Auburn to Bernie Moore Track Stadium on Saturday for the SEC Triangular meet.

Field events get underway with the hammer throw at 10 a.m., while track events will begin with the 3,000-meter steeplechase at 12:45 p.m.

After opening the outdoor season with a conservative showing last weekend at the Alumni Gold Relays, LSU head coach Pat Henry will gradually get more athletes involved this weekend, using more of his NCAA athletes.

“We’ll line more people up this weekend then we did last weekend,” said Henry. “It’s early in the outdoor season so we don’t want to overdo it, but we’ll certainly be a little more aggressive with our NCAA athletes this week.”

NCAA Indoor 200-meter champion Muna Lee will compete in her first open event this weekend, headlining the women’s 200-meter field. In addition Lee will anchor the Lady Tigers’ 4×100-meter relay that got off to a good start last weekend by winning the Alumni Gold title in an NCAA provisional time of 44.67.

NCAA triple jump champion Walter Davis will wait another week to open in his signature event. The 2000 Olympian will, however, open up in the long jump on Saturday, an event he has finished second at the NCAA Indoor Championships each of the past two years and also finished second at last year’s NCAA Outdoor meet.

The Tigers are not ready to open up their vaunted 4×400-meter relay team yet, but opening leg Lueroy Colquhoun will see his first action of the season. Colquhoun, a fourth place finisher at the NCAA Indoor meet in the 400-meter dash, will open up in the 400-meter hurdles on Saturday, as will LSU football player Bennie Brazell, who will make his first open appearance in an LSU track uniform.

Other notable entries on Saturday include All-Americans Ronetta Smith and Lolo Jones in the 400 and 100-meter dashes respectively.

Following the SEC Triangular the LSU track and field team takes to the road for the first of three consecutive road meets. Both squads will head to Houston next Saturday before returning to Texas the following weekend for the 75th Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays in Austin.

LSU will return to Bernie Moore Stadium on April 20 for the LSU Team Championships.
