ATHENS, Ga. — The LSU women’s tennis team was defeated by the No. 1-ranked Georgia Lady Bulldogs on Sunday, as the Lady Tigers fell, 7-0, at the Dan C. Magill Tennis Complex in Athens, Ga.
“Georgia is playing some outstanding tennis right now,” said LSU head coach Tony Minnis. “They are the top-ranked team in the nation and today they definitely played like it. We can’t allow ourselves to get down after this loss, because we have a huge match versus Auburn on Tuesday.”
With the loss, the Lady Tigers dropped to an overall record of 7-6 and an 0-4 mark in Southeastern Conference play. Georgia earned its sixth-consecutive SEC win and upped its overall record on the season to 15-1. The Lady Bulldogs own a perfect 6-0 mark against conference opponents.
Georgia claimed an early 1-0 lead in Sunday’s SEC contest as the Lady Bulldogs won two of the three doubles matches to clinch the doubles point.
LSU’s tandem of Bruna Colosio and Rocio Fantilli pulled off the upset of the day on court No. 1 by knocking off the Lady Bulldogs’ 11th-ranked combination of Agata Cioroch and Lori Grey, 9-8(4). With the win, the Lady Tigers’ pair improved to 6-4 on the season.
In singles play, Georgia notched straight-set victories at every position except on court No. 3. Fantilli, the Lady Tigers’ sophomore from Puerto Madryn, Argentina, forced a third-set super tiebreaker against 39th-ranked Anne Nguyen, but fell in the frame, 10-8.
The LSU women’s tennis team will next be in action on Tuesday, as the Lady Tigers host Auburn in a morning contest beginning at 10 a.m. at the W.T. “Dub” Robinson Tennis Stadium. Admission is free to all LSU tennis matches.
