Thomas, Theriot Return as Track Begins Outdoor Season

BATON ROUGE — Despite not using a bulk of its NCAA-caliber athletes, the LSU track and field team got off to a respectable start the outdoor season on Saturday afternoon at the LSU Alumni Gold Relays at Bernie Moore Track Stadium.

The men’s and women’s teams combined to post four NCAA provisional marks, while the men’s and women’s teams combined to win 12 events.

“I think we had a good outing with both of our teams today,” said LSU head coach Pat Henry. “It was a little bit more laid back atmosphere but I think it was a productive day in a number of areas.”

Marcus Thomas finally made his long awaited debut in the long jump and certainly delivered. The senior All-American began his final campaign with a wind-aided jump of 25 feet 10 inches, a very high NCAA provisional mark.

Another Tiger making a successful return was Blake Theriot in the javelin. Theriot competed for the first time since finishing eighth at the 2000 NCAA Outdoor Championships and won the event with a throw of 216-10, just off the provisional standard.

“It was great to see both of those guys back out there competing,” said Henry. “Marcus and Blake both had very promising openers today and will build on this.”

Javier Nieto and Candice Gonzalez kick-started LSU with a pair of winning efforts in the men’s and women’s hammer throws. Nieto, a three-time NCAA qualifier, won the men’s competition with a mark of 193-6.

Gonzalez won the women’s event with a throw of 181-9, just off the NCAA provisional standard, while Mallory McDonald finished second with a toss of 176-2.

Zamyal Jackson looked strong in the women’s 100-meter hurdles and coasted to victory in a time of 13.45 seconds. The wind, however, was over the NCAA’s allowable mark of 4.0 meters per second and the time did not count as an NCAA qualifier.

Elsewhere on the men’s side, pole vaulter Daniel Trosclair picked up where he left off in the indoor season and recorded a provisional mark for his second straight meet. Trosclair won the event with a mark of 17-2 3/4.

The other provisional mark for the Tigers was a wind-aided time of 20.82 in the 200-meter dash by Robert Parham who finished second.

Likhaya Dayile made his outdoor opener a respectable one, winning the men’s 5,000-meter run in a time of 14:49.37 with very little competition.

LSU returns to action on Saturday when Georgia and Auburn come to Bernie Moore Track Stadium for the SEC Three-Way.
