ATHENS, Ga. — The LSU women’s tennis team closes out a four-match road trip on Sunday, as the Lady Tigers challenge the No. 1-ranked Georgia Lady Bulldogs at 1 p.m. (Central time) in Athens, Ga.
“It just keeps getting tougher and tougher to win on the road in the SEC,” said LSU head coach Tony Minnis. “We’ve already played three top-25 teams on the road and tomorrow we play the top-ranked team in the nation. Georgia is a good team, but I believe that we also have a lot of talented players that are capable of winning their matches.”
LSU heads into Sunday’s Southeastern Conference duel with an overall record of 7-5 on the season. The Lady Tigers’ five losses on the year have all come against opponents ranked in the top 35. LSU fell to No. 5 Florida, No. 10 Tennessee, No. 19 Texas A&M, No. 22 South Carolina and 35th-ranked Florida State in dual-match play.
The Lady Tigers are winless in SEC play this season and own an 0-3 conference mark. LSU’s SEC losses have all come on the road against highly ranked opponents. The Lady Tigers will play their first conference match at home on Tuesday, March 19, at 10 a.m.
Georgia hosts the Lady Tigers on Sunday with a 14-1 overall record on the season. The Lady Bulldogs defeated Arkansas, 7-0, on Friday to remain undefeated in SEC play. With the win, Georgia upped its conference record to 5-0.
The Lady Bulldogs’ lone loss of the season came on Wednesday, as the nation’s top-ranked team was upset by No. 25 Virginia Commonwealth, 4-3. The loss snapped Georgia’s 42-match home winning streak.
This is the second-straight season that the Lady Tigers will face Georgia on the road in Athens, Ga. In last year’s contest, the Lady Bulldogs rallied to defeat LSU, 5-1. With the win, Georgia earned a 23-1 advantage in the all-time series. LSU’s lone win against the Lady Bulldogs was a 6-3 victory in 1985.
