BATON ROUGE — The LSU soccer team won four-consecutive games on Saturday to lay claim to the championship title of the inaugural Tiger Spring Soccer Classic at the newly renovated LSU Soccer Complex.
LSU won its second-tournament championship of the spring season on Saturday, as the Tigers dropped Southeastern Louisiana, the Texas Wave, Louisiana-Monroe and Louisiana-Lafayette en-route to the Tiger Spring Soccer Classic title.
The Tigers knocked off UL-Lafayette, 1-0, in the championship game with a clutch game-winning goal scored by All-Southeastern Conference performer Ashley Mitnick. In the four games played on Saturday, LSU’s Robyn Desormeaux allowed a meager one goal during the Tigers’ championship run.
LSU defeated Southeastern Louisiana, 2-1, in the first round of competition, prior to beating the Texas Wave, 2-0, in the second round of the eight-team tournament. The Texas Wave is a highly-touted club team comprised of some of Texas’ top soccer players.
To advance to the championship game of the tournament, the Tigers rallied for four goals against the UL-Monroe Indians to win the contest handily, 4-0.
Coach Fotopoulos and the LSU soccer team will begin the 2002 season in either late August or early September.
