BATON ROUGE — After averaging close to a double-double last week, Lady Tiger Temeka Johnson was named the Louisiana Sports Writer’s Association Women’s Basketball Player of the Week, as announced on Tuesday afternoon.
The sophomore from New Orleans completed the final week of regular season action by averaging 16.5 points, 5.0 rebounds and 9.0 assists in a win over Mississippi State and a loss at Alabama. Against Alabama, she led the team in scoring with a career-high 19 points and seven assists.
Against Mississippi State, she recorded her second double-double of the season with 14 points and 11 assists.
She currently leads the SEC in assists per game and ranks third nationally in assists per game at 7.7. She also ranks third in assists by a sophomore in LSU school history and needs just one assist to ranks in the top 10 in single-season assists in school history despite playing in just 19 games this season.
This is the second consecutive LSWA Player of the Week honor for a Lady Tiger. Junior Aiysha Smith earned the honor a week ago.
With the regular season complete, the Lady Tigers will travel to Nashville for the SEC Tournament this weekend. Entering the tournament as the fourth seed, LSU earned a first round bye and will face the winner of the Mississippi State-Kentucky game on Friday at 6 p.m. in the Gaylord Entertainment Center.
