Three Lady Tigers Named to SEC Honor Roll

BATON ROUGE — LSU’s Stacy Newton, Ke-Ke Tardy and Allison Weiner were each named to the Southeastern Conference Academic Honor Roll, it was announced Tuesday.

To be eligible for the award, student-athletes must have a 3.0 grade point average for the past year or for their career, be a sophomore in academic classification, and have 24 semester hours countable toward a degree. The 2002 SEC Women’s Basketball Academic Honor Roll is based on grades from the 2000-01 academic calendar.

Tardy is currently averaging 9.9 points and 4.9 rebounds a game for the Lady Tigers and is second on the team in blocked shots with 18. She scored a season-high 19 points against Ole Miss and pulled down a career-high 15 rebounds against Grambling. She has also recorded two double-doubles this season, against Grambling and Louisiana-Lafayette.

Both Newton and Weiner completed their eligibility with the Lady Tigers last season and Weiner earned her degree in political science in the spring of 2001.

A total of 41 student-athletes were named to the 2002 honor roll. Tennessee and Florida topped the list with six student-athletes on the academic roster each. Ole Miss, South Carolina and Vanderbilt were close behind with five honorees each, while Georgia posted four on the list. Arkansas, LSU and Mississippi State each had three members on the honor roll.

With the regular season complete, the Lady Tigers will travel to Nashville for the SEC Tournament this weekend. Entering the tournament as the fourth seed, LSU earned a first round bye and will face the winner of the Mississippi State-Kentucky game on Friday at 6 p.m. in the Gaylord Entertainment Center.
