COLUMBUS, Ga. — LSU softball players Kristin Schmidt and Julie Wiese have been named to the National Fastpitch Coaches Association LeadOff Classic All-Tournament team.
The Tigers went 3-2 in the event and bowed out of the Gold Championship Bracket in the semifinals to Alabama. LSU’s other loss came to eventual champion Nebraska, which beat the Crimson Tide for the crown.
Schmidt piled up a 2-0 mark in the tournament with an ERA of 1.12. She pitched a three-hitter against Illinois-Chicago to help the Tigers earn an at-large bid in the Gold Bracket. She also held Alabama to just one hit in nearly five innings of work in the semifinals.
Wiese was the offensive spark for LSU, hitting .538 on the weekend. In 13 at-bats, she notched seven hits, including two doubles and a home run. She scored five runs in the tournament, including the lone run in the Tigers 1-0 win over No. 13 Fresno State.
Nebraska’s Peaches James, who threw two one-hitters in the tournament, was named the tournament MVP. One of her one-hitters came against LSU.
