FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — The LSU diving team completed day two of competition at the 2002 Southeastern Conference Swimming and Diving Championships on Tuesday at the Arkansas Natatorium at Fayetteville, Ark.
Preliminaries and finals of the men’s 1-meter and women’s 3-meter competitions were held on Tuesday. LSU All-American Jamie Watkins finished third in the finals of the 3-meter with a score of 509.35. Teammate Barb Gorst finished fifth with a score of 479.60. Watkins and Gorst placed second and third respectively in the prelims. In the semifinals, Watkins finished third and Gorst was fifth.
Alabama’s Lane Bassham won the 3-meter competition with a final score of 534.95. Tennessee’s Jamie Sanger, winner in the 1-meter competition on Monday, finished eighth in the 3-meter.
On the men’s side, junior Jace Pitre was ninth in the prelims with a score of 280.95 and Kyle Van Arsdall finished 12th with a score of 271.30. Neither Pitre nor Van Arsdall made the finals, as only the top eight in each competition advance to the finals. Kentucky’s Clayton Moss won the event with a score of 344.60.
The meet continues on Wednesday with preliminaries in five events beginning at 10:15 a.m. The day begins with men’s platform diving followed by the 200-yard medley relay and the 800-yard freestyle relay for both men and women. Preliminaries of women’s platform diving will start at 2 p.m., and then the finals of men’s platform will begin at 6 p.m. Finals of women’s platform and the two swimming events will follow later on Wednesday evening.
Watkins looks to win her second straight platform title. She won the platform competition last season at the SEC Championships at Tuscaloosa, Ala.
