Smith Named SEC Player of the Week

BATON ROUGE — After recording a double-double in LSU’s victory over No. 9 South Carolina, Aiysha Smith was named the Southeastern Conference Women’s Basketball Player of the Week.

The junior from Detroit, Mich., scored a team-high 18 points and pulled down a game-high 12 rebounds in the Lady Tigers’ 72-62 win over USC for her sixth double-double of the season.

Against No. 6 Vanderbilt earlier in the week, she tied her career-high with 23 points, her third 20-point game of the season. For the week, she averaged 20.5 points and 8.5 rebounds a game.

Smith has now scored in double-figures in all 23 games this season and leads the team in scoring, rebounding, steals and field-goal percentage. She is also tied for 11th for all-time in steals by a junior in LSU history, needing just one steal to break into the top 10.

This is the first SEC Player of the Week honor for a Lady Tiger this season and the first honors since Marie Ferdinand earned Player of the Week honors on Dec. 18, 2000.

LSU will close out the regular-season home schedule on Thursday against Mississippi State at 7 p.m. in the Pete Maravich Assembly Center.
