BATON ROUGE — The LSU track and field team will welcome a solid field to the Carl Maddox Field House on Friday evening for the LSU Twilight, its last competition before next weekend’s SEC Indoor Championships.
Field events begin at 3 p.m. while track events have been moved up an hour to start at 5 p.m. to accommodate the size of the competition.
“This is a good meet to get us ready for the SEC Championships,” said LSU head coach Pat Henry. “We’ll compete some people that we feel need the extra competition, but we’ll rest some people who have worked pretty hard the past couple of weeks.”
The top-ranked Lady Tigers and third-ranked Tigers are in prime shape heading into next weeks SEC meet and next month’s NCAA Championships, however, Henry still feels he can be productive in a few areas on Friday evening.
LSU will run several of its quarter-milers on Friday, as well as several of its straightaway sprinters. He will, however, rest both of his mile relays this weekend, as well as a number of the horizontal jumpers.
The Lady Tigers assumed the No. 1 ranking on Tuesday and have been one of the most productive teams this season with seven athletes ranked in the top five in the nation in their respective events. The Lady Tigers have posted 14 NCAA qualifying marks through their first four meets.
The Tigers have posted seven NCAA qualifiers through the early stages of the season and find themselves in prime shape to defend their NCAA Indoor crown. Henry, however, still feels he can add to the list of qualifiers this weekend to increase his squad’s chances.
The SEC Indoor Championships will be a three-day event for the first time in 2002, beginning next Friday and running through Sunday. The Tigers finished second in Lexington a year ago, while the Lady Tigers finished fourth.
