BATON ROUGE — LSU senior right fielder Sean Barker has been named the Southeastern Conference’s first baseball Player of the Week for the 2002 season.

Barker, a native of Bakersfield, Calif., batted .600 (9-for-15) and collected seven RBI in the Tigers’ three-game sweep this past weekend of Birmingham-Southern at Alex Box Stadium.

Barker started the season by going 4-for-6 on Friday night, including a two-run single that tied the game in the ninth inning. He added a 3-for-5 effort on Saturday and a 2-for-4, four-RBI performance on Sunday. Barker finished the weekend as LSU’s leader in batting average, slugging percentage (.588), slugging percentage (.667) and stolen bases (3).

Barker, who transferred prior to the 2001 season from Bakersfield Community College, played in 38 games as a junior and batted .338 in 80 at-bats.

South Carolina’s David Marchbanks was named the SEC’s Pitcher of the Week after throwing six innings of one-hit ball and striking out 11 in the Gamecocks’ victory Friday over Charleston Southern.

LSU (3-0), which moved up two spots to No. 5 in this week’s Baseball America poll, hosts Southeastern Louisiana (1-0) on Tuesday night at 6:30 p.m.
