No. 16 Men’s Tennis Looks for 3-0 Start Against Lobos

BATON ROUGE — The 16th-ranked LSU men’s tennis team returns to action after a two-week hiatus on Sunday, as the Tigers host the New Mexico Lobos at 1 p.m. at the W.T. “Dub” Robinson Tennis Stadium.

“New Mexico is a solid team and we are going to have to play some of good tennis to beat them,” said LSU head coach Jeff Brown. “They are a top-level opponent and our players are extremely excited to get the bulk of our season underway.”

LSU heads into Sunday’s non-conference battle against New Mexico with a 2-0 overall record on the season. The Tigers demolished both Centenary, 6-0, and Southern, 6-0, in an opening-season doubleheader on Jan. 26.

The Lobos come into Baton Rouge with a 3-2 overall record and a full head of steam. In New Mexico’s previous match, the Lobos gained some positive momentum by sinking Oklahoma, 7-0. The New Mexico tennis team also recorded wins over Northern Arizona and Boise State, while the Lobos fell to both San Diego State and Yale this season.

Sunday’s contest will mark the first matchup between LSU and New Mexico since the 1981 season. In that match, the Tigers were victorious, 9-0, under then head coach Steve Strome.

The 16th-ranked LSU men’s tennis team will look to improve to 3-0 on the season, as the Tigers face the New Mexico Lobos at 1 p.m. at the W.T. “Dub” Robinson Tennis Stadium. Admission is free to all LSU tennis matches.
