Women’s Tennis Improves to 5-0 With Pair of Wins

BATON ROUGE — The LSU women’s tennis team increased its winning streak against in-state rivals to 34-straight matches on Sunday, as the Lady Tigers defeated both Louisiana Tech and Louisiana-Monroe at the W.T. “Dub” Robinson Tennis Stadium.

“We played extremely well today,” said LSU head coach Tony Minnis. “I’m really impressed with how we looked out there, and I think that this was the best tennis that we played this season. We definitely took care of business.”

In the opening contest of the Lady Tigers’ second doubleheader of the season, LSU pounded the Louisiana Tech Lady Techsters, 6-0. The Lady Tigers were victorious in straight sets on every court except No. 1, where LSU’s Bruna Colosio outlasted Louisiana Tech’s Saharai Uriarte, 6-1, 4-6, 6-2.

The LSU women’s tennis team dominated the competition even more in its second match of the afternoon, as the Lady Tigers won in straight sets on every court against Louisiana-Monroe. LSU’s 7-0 win was highlighted by Amy McIlhaney’s second 6-0, 6-0 victory of the day. The Lady Tigers’ senior from Marietta, Ga., was perfect against both Lauren Longbothem of Louisiana Tech and Melissa Vukevich of Louisiana-Monroe.

With the sweep of Sunday’s doubleheader, LSU improved its overall record on the season to 5-0. Last week, the Lady Tigers recorded victories over Centenary, 5-1, Southern, 5-1, and Purdue, 5-2. This is the first time that LSU has started a season with a perfect 5-0 record since 1999.

“This has really been a good start for our team this season,” Minnis said. “If we can keep on playing at the pace that we played today, then we can have an outstanding season this year.”

The 28th-ranked LSU women’s tennis team will next be in action on Saturday, Feb. 9, as the Lady Tigers travel to Tallahassee, Fla., to face the Florida State Seminoles at 1 p.m.
