BATON ROUGE — The LSU women’s tennis team remained ranked among the nation’s elite on Wednesday, as the Lady Tigers earned the No. 28 spot in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association rankings.
“It’s not a bad position to be ranked where we are right now,” said LSU head coach Tony Minnis. “We’re content with being the 28th-ranked team in the nation, but we know that we can definitely move up a lot further in the rankings. We have a lot of tough opponents on our schedule this season and with some big wins we’ll move up.”
The Lady Tigers own an undefeated 3-0 overall record on the season after beating Centenary, Southern and Purdue last week. LSU dropped both Centenary and Southern by a count of 5-1, while the Lady Tigers defeated the Purdue Lady Boilermakers, 5-2.
The Southeastern Conference dominated the rankings as SEC representatives occupied four of the top-six positions in the poll. Stanford earned the No. 1 ranking and was followed by Duke, Florida, Vanderbilt and Georgia to round out the top-five teams. Tennessee notched the No. 6 ranking, while South Carolina was No. 22, Kentucky was No. 24 and Alabama came in as the No. 26 team in the nation.
The Lady Tigers’ No. 28 ranking is the same ranking that the team finished the 2001 dual-match season with after qualifying for its seventh-straight NCAA Tournament appearance. LSU ended last season with a 14-10 record.
LSU faces a challenging schedule this season as seven of their opponents are ranked among the top-30 teams in the country. LSU will face each of its 12 SEC foes this season and host the 19th-ranked Texas A&M Aggies in a tough non-conference match.
The 28th-ranked LSU women’s tennis team will look to advance to 4-0 on the season this Sunday, as the Lady Tigers host the Louisiana-Monroe Lady Indians at 1 p.m. at the W.T. “Dub” Robinson Tennis Stadium.
