Former Tigers Mawae, Faneca Named Pro Bowl Starters

BATON ROUGE — Former LSU football standouts Kevin Mawae and Alan Faneca have been named to the starting lineup for the AFC in next month’s Pro Bowl, the NFL announced on Saturday.

Mawae, a center for the New York Jets, will be making his third straight appearance in the Pro Bowl, while Faneca, a member of the Pittsburgh Steelers, is on the squad for the first time. Mawae will start at center for the Feb. 9 game, while Faneca will lineup alongside Mawae at guard.

Mawae, a Leesville, La., native, played for the Tigers from 1990-93. He earned All-Southeastern Conference honors as an offensive tackle in 1991.

Mawae played three positions – center, guard, and tackle -during his four seasons with the Tigers.

Faneca, a native of Rosenburg, Texas, was a finalist for the Outland Award in 1997. He was LSU’s first winner of the Jacobs Trophy, which is given to the best blocker in the SEC, in 1997. Faneca was also a first team All-America in 1997 as well as a first team All-SEC pick in 1996 and 1997.
