OKLAHOMA CITY — Lady Tiger seniors Britni Sneed and Trena Peel were selected to participate in the USA Softball World Championship team camp in May and June of this year.
The pair were two of 22 athletes selected out of 46 participants after a three-day tryout camp in Chula Vista, Calif. They will receive a direct invitation to the World Championship camp as the core athletes. Both were members of LSU’s 2001 SEC Championship team that advanced to the program’s first ever Women’s College World Series, where the team finished with a final ranking of third nationally.
“Any time that they can stay in the (USA Softball) system, it has to be good for them, and for our program” LSU softball coach Yvette Girouard said of Sneed and Peel. “It sounds like they both had good camps, especially Trena, and I am pleased that they will have a chance to represent LSU on the national level.”
Sneed, a pitcher from Houston, Texas, was a first team All-America selection and the SEC Player of the Year. She was also the Most Valuable Player in the SEC Tournament and NCAA Regional Tournament with a record of 36-6 record and a 0.66 ERA. In addition, she set the school and SEC records for single season strikeouts with 410.
Peel, an outfielder from Aurora, Colo., was second on the team in batting last season with an average of .337 and nine home runs. She was named to the All-South Region and All-SEC teams.
Last summer, Sneed helped the USA National Blue team earn the gold medal at the Pan Am qualifier in Venezuela with a 2-0 record including a no-hitter against Canada and a perfect game against Columbia. Peel was a member of the USA Nationals Red team that earned the Canada Cup championship.
Included in the list of 22 athletes selected for the camp are 2000 Olympic gold medallists Leah O’Brien-Amico, Laura Berg, Crystl Bustos, Lisa Fernandez, Stacey Nuveman and Michele Smith. The U.S. will try and win its fifth straight World Championship in Saskatoon, Canada and also attempt to qualify as the top seed for the 2004 Olympics for the third consecutive time.
