BATON ROUGE — LSU’s Fran Flory and Meagan Davis took the state’s top volleyball honors from the Louisiana Sports Writers Association as they were named Louisiana Coach of the Year and Louisiana Player of the Year, respectively.
Tulane’s Anastesia Kenon earned Freshman of the Year honors while Jaime Cross of Louisiana Tech was named the Newcomer of the Year.
Flory led LSU to a 16-11 overall record and a second place finish in the SEC Western Division. The Tigers 10-5 conference mark was the best since 1992 and the 10 league wins was the third most in school history.
Davis, a three-time first-team All-Louisiana selection, had the second most efficient season in school history, hitting .377 while racking up 2.58 kills per game and 1.17 blocks per game on the year.
Joining Davis on the first team was Angie Eppers of McNeese State, Jennifer Hampton of LSU, Britney Hurst of Tulane, Clarice Laires of UL-Lafayette and Mandy Withrow of Southeastern Louisiana.
Other than Davis, only Hampton and Withrow have been an All-Louisiana honoree before, as Hampton was tabbed to the second-team last season and Withrow was in 1999.
Kenon, who highlighted the All-Louisiana Second-Team, recorded 3.80 kills and 3.47 digs per game, both ranking second on the Green Wave squad behind Hurst.
Joining Kenon on the second team was LSU’s Lauren Cuyler and Katie Kubena, Kubena’s twin sister Denise Kubena of Southeastern Louisiana, Ann MacMillan of New Orleans and Janaina Gomes of UL-Lafayette.
Cross, a junior setter came to Louisiana Tech from Kansas City CC and became an immediate starter. She ranked sixth in the Western Athletic Conference in assists per game with 11.00.
