Soccer’s Brown Named Louisiana Freshman of the Year

BATON ROUGE — Artie Brown, LSU’s leading scorer during the 2001 soccer season, was named the Louisiana Freshman of the Year on Saturday by the Louisiana Sports Writer’s Association.

“This is a huge honor for Artie to be named the Freshman of the Year,” said LSU head coach George Fotopoulos. “She had an outstanding season for us and it’s good to see her reap the rewards of all of her hard work.”

Brown, who prepped at University High School in Baton Rouge, became the first Tiger to garner Louisiana Freshman of the Year honors on Saturday, as she was also the first LSU freshman to lead the team in both goals scored and points in 2001. She ended her freshman campaign with eight goals and 18 points while adding two assists.

LSU’s junior defensive specialist, Ashley Mitnick, was named to the 2001 All-Louisiana Soccer Team on Saturday. Mitnick, the Tigers’ three-time All-Southeastern Conference Second Team member, led LSU with six assists in 2001 and is currently tied for the all-time assist mark in school history with 14.

“It’s also good to see that Ashley was recognized for all of her hard work and leadership,” Fotopoulos said. “She’s definitely one of the best defenders that I’ve ever coached and she deserves every single honor that she receives.”

The Tigers’ Rachel Cohen and Danielle Keath were named Honorable Mention All-Louisiana members by the Louisiana Sports Writer’s Association on Saturday. Cohen was a double-threat for LSU in 2001 and accumulated four goals, five assists and 13 points. She finished second on the team in both goals and assists.

Keath, LSU’s highly-touted freshman from Melbourne, Fla., started in all 18 of the Tigers’ games and scored two goals while adding an assist.

Louisiana-Monroe’s Chelsea Shriner was named the 2001 Louisiana Player of the Year after scoring 10 goals and leading her team to its first berth in the Southland Conference Tournament. ULM’s Stacy Lamb earned Coach of the Year honors after guiding the Lady Indians to a 9-10-2 overall record and a 7-5 SLC mark.
