BATON ROUGE — LSU offensive coordinator Jimbo Fisher has been named one of six finalists for the sixth annual Broyles Award, which is given to the nation’s top assistant coach, the Major Sports Association of Little Rock, Ark., announced on Tuesday.
Other finalists for the award include: Florida receivers coach Dwayne Dixon, Miami defensive coordinator Randy Shannon, Virginia Tech defensive coordinator Bud Foster, Fresno State offensive coordinator Andy Ludwig and Texas defensive coordinator Carl Reese.
This year, Fisher’s offense has practically re-written the LSU record books as the Tigers are averaging over 466 yards of total offense, a school-record, while scoring over 30 points a contest. This year’s LSU offense is the first team in school history to record over 5,000 yards in a single-season. Currently, the Tigers have recorded 5,133 total yards.
In addition, LSU has set the school-record for passing yards per game at 311.5 per contest as well as single-season passing yards with 3,427.
Perhaps LSU’s finest offensive moment came against Alabama as the Tigers rolled up 611 total yards, including a school-record 528 through the air, in the 35-21 win over the Crimson Tide. In the Alabama game, LSU wide receiver Josh Reed set a pair of SEC records with 19 catches for 293 yards, while quarterback Rohan Davey completed a school-record 35 passes for another school mark of 528 yards.
The Tigers have also balanced the passing game with a running attack that averages 155.1 yards per contest. Sophomore running back LaBrandon Toefield has rushed for 974 yards and tied an SEC record with 19 rushing touchdowns. His 114 total points are also a school-record for points in a season.
LSU’s offense has produced 500 yards or more of total offense four times this year and the Tigers have scored 40 or more points in a game four times.
The Broyles Award is named in honor of longtime Arkansas coach/athletic director Frank Broyles, who developed a reputation during his stellar coaching career of producing outstanding assistant coaches. More than 25 Broyles assistant coaches went on to become head coaches at the college or pro level.
The winner of the award will be announced on Dec. 12 during a banquet at the Statehouse Convention Center in Little Rock. The winner of the award will receiver $5,000 and a 100-pound cast bronze statue valued at $5,000.
Each finalist receives $1,000 plus a set of Wilson golf clubs and a personalized golf bag.
Tickets to the banquet are $75 per person or $750 per table of 10 and can be purchased by calling the Greater Little Rock Chamber of Commerce at (501) 374-2001.
