BATON ROUGE — Four current LSU soccer players and two former Tigers taking graduate school classes were named to the 2001 Southeastern Conference Academic Honor Roll on Wednesday, announced the SEC office.

“Being a part of the SEC Academic Honor Roll is a huge accomplishment,” said LSU head coach George Fotopoulos. “These six young women have shown excellence both on the field and in the classroom and it is good for them to be recognized for it.”

The Tigers’ Mandy Heintz, Leigh McGovern, Ashley Mitnick and Bonnie Otillio are the current LSU players that were named to the SEC Academic Honor Roll on Wednesday, while Sarah Gilbert and Bryna Warnock earned the honors for their work in graduate school. Both Gilbert and Warnock were members of the LSU soccer team who graduated in the spring of 2001.

A total of 107 student-athletes were named to the 2001 SEC Women’s Soccer Academic Honor Roll by SEC Commissioner Roy Kramer. The University of Kentucky topped the list with 13 student-athletes on the academic roster.

The University of Florida was close behind with 12 players honored, while the University of Arkansas had 11 student-athletes earn honor roll status.

“As a team, we’ve always put a focus on being a student first,” Fotopoulos said. “We want all of our students to succeed in the classroom and we’re taking steps to get even more players on the SEC Academic Honor Roll.”

To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must have a 3.0 grade point average for either the past year or for their career. They must be a sophomore or higher in academic classification and have 24 semester hours countable toward a degree.

LSU’s Heintz, McGovern, Mitnick, Otillio and Warnock each earned their second-straight SEC Academic Honor Roll awards on Wednesday, while Gilbert notched her fourth-consecutive SEC Academic Honor.

Heintz finished the 2000-01 academic calender with 3.21 GPA in kinesiology, McGovern earned a 3.90 mark in kinesiology, Mitnick ended with a 3.15 average in information systems and decisions sciences and Otillio maintained a 3.64 GPA in elementary education. The Tigers’ graduate school students, Gilbert and Warnock, finished with 3.71 and 3.81 grade point averages, respectively.

The 2001 SEC Women’s Soccer Tournament is Thursday-Sunday, Nov. 8-11, at the LSU Soccer Complex in Baton Rouge.
