ORLANDO, Fla. — Outside hitter Jennifer Hampton had 18 kills and 19 digs on Saturday to lead the LSU volleyball team to a 30-26, 27-30, 30-17, 30-27, victory over Virginia Tech in the University of Florida Conference Challenge at Disney’s Wide World of Sports.
With the win, the Tigers (16-11) finish the regular season with their second winning record in three years and their best mark since 1995. Virginia Tech (9-19) lost four in a row to end the year.
Florida won the tournament with a 3-1 victory over Notre Dame in Saturday’s second match.
Hampton, who hit .350 on the afternoon and also had three aces, led four LSU players in double-figures as seniors Meagan Davis and Meghan Bedford registered 16 kills a piece in their final match. Freshman Kyra Lancon finished with 13.
Davis’ 16 kills came on just 33 swings with no errors for a match best .485 hitting percentage.
The Hokies, which were outkilled 70-61, placed three players in double-figures in kills. Ana Lang paced the Hokies with 16 kills while Holly Disser and Cheryl Stinson each had 13.
Setter Katie Kubena guided the Tigers to a .272 hitting percentage for the match as she posted 59 assists to go along with her 12 digs, five blocks and three aces. Virginia Tech hit just .164 in the match.
Middle blocker Rachel Vogt was a wall in the middle with a career-high nine blocks, including one solo, as LSU outblocked the Hokies 13-8.
The Tiger offense was slow to get started on the afternoon, hitting .064 and .196 in the opening two frames. However, they rebounded with a .486 clip in game three and a .395 mark in game four.
