Women’s Tennis Signs Top Player From Domincan Republic

BATON ROUGE — The LSU women’s tennis team added its second highly-touted recruit of the fall signing period on Wednesday, as the Lady Tigers’ 11th-year head coach Tony Minnis announced the commitment of Daysi Espinal for the 2002-2003 season.

“Daysi is an exceptional talent and should bring some good international experience to our team for the future,” Minnis said. “She will be a good fit here at LSU and we expect to see some good things from her.”

Espinal, a native of Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, is currently the No. 1 ranked player in the Dominican Republic and chose to attend LSU despite being recruited by many of the top programs in the United States.

She is the second Lady Tiger tennis player signed during the fall recruiting period and will join Erin McGill on the court for the 2002-2003 season. McGill, who signed with LSU on Monday, is the 26th-ranked high school player in the nation.

The LSU women’s tennis team will begin its spring season on Jan. 11, as the Lady Tigers head to Williamsburg, Va., to compete in the William and Mary Invitational.
