Soccer Team Wraps Up 2001 at No. 7 Texas

AUSTIN, Texas — The LSU soccer team will close out its 2001 season on Sunday, as the Tigers challenge the seventh-ranked Texas Longhorns at 1 p.m. at Mike A. Myers Stadium in Austin, Texas.

“This is going to be a very challenging test for our team,” said LSU head coach George Fotopoulos. “Texas is one of the best teams in the nation and they are very difficult to beat at home. We just want to go out there and compete at the best of our ability and finish the season off on a positive note.”

LSU heads into Sunday’s non-conference battle with an overall record of 7-7-3 on the season and a 6-1-1 mark versus opponents outside of the Southeastern Conference. Texas enters the duel with an 11-4 overall record on the season and the Longhorns are 2-3 against non-conference opponents.

Both LSU and Texas look to rebound from disappointing losses on Friday.

In LSU’s previous contest, the Tigers fell to Arkansas in heartbreaking fashion as the Lady ?Backs notched a late tying goal with five minutes remaining in regulation and then scored the game-winning goal 10 minutes into overtime to win, 6-5. The loss dropped LSU to a final record of 1-6-2 in SEC play.

The Longhorns lost their first Big 12 match of the season on Friday, as Texas was shellacked by 15th-ranked Texas A&M, 6-0, on the road in College Station, Texas. The defeat snapped the Longhorns’ 11-game winning streak and was Texas’ first conference loss in over a year. The Longhorns’ most recent conference defeat was a 2-0 loss to Oklahoma on Nov. 3, 2000.

Sunday’s match-up will be the first meeting between the two programs.
