BATON ROUGE — The LSU Tigers, coming off a strong 83-59 win over Campbell on Saturday, step right back into action Monday against cross-town rival Southern University at 7 p.m. at the Maravich Assembly Center.
Tickets for the Tigers and Jaguars remain on sale at the LSU Athletic Ticket Office and beginning at the Assembly Center ticket office two hours prior to tipoff. Tickets are $10 each with LSU students admitted free with a valid ID. Southern University students, faculty and staff may purchase up to two tickets with a valid ID for $5 each. The game will be broadcast throughout the state on the LSU Sports Network (98.1 FM in Baton Rouge).
This will be the fifth meeting between the two Baton Rouge schools dating back to 1985 with the Tigers having won all four previous games. Only one of the four games has been more than 11 points in the final margin. The last meeting came on Dec. 28, 1997 when first-year LSU coach John Brady won 77-66.
While the Tigers have opened the season, this will be the opener for the Jaguars under returning head coach Ben Jobe, who previously served 10 years at Southern (1986-96). In exhibition games, the Jags have defeated VASDA USA, 88-83, and the Lake Charles Supreme Court, 91-71.
Unlike Campbell, the Jaguars are expected to push the ball up court and shoot quickly with Jobe looking for his Southern players to put up some 85 to 90 shots.
The Tigers will again put two growing win streaks on the line Monday night. The win over Campbell on Saturday gave LSU 29 consecutive wins over non-conference opponents at the Assembly Center and the Tigers will be trying to extend a 36-game winning streak against Louisiana competition extending back to the 1988-89 season.
In the win over Campbell, All-SEC forward Ronald Dupree had 18 points and tied his career high of 16 rebounds as he recorded his 16th career-double-double. Also in double figures were Collis Temple with 16, Torris Bright 13 (9 assists) and Antonio Hudson, 11 points in his first collegiate start.
Following this game, LSU leaves Tuesday for the Big Island Invitational in Hawaii which begins on Friday at 6:30 p.m. Baton Rouge time against Weber State. That event runs through Sunday and LSU returns home for its next game on Nov. 28 against Towson.
