Lady Tigers Sign Jeanerette Star Clavelle

BATON ROUGE — The Lady Tiger basketball program received the National Letter of Intent from Jeanerette High School star and Class 3A Most Valuable Player Treynell Clavelle on Wednesday afternoon. She becomes the first player to sign with the Lady Tigers during the early signing period.

Clavelle, a 6-4 center, averaged nearly 27 points a game as a junior while pulling down over 13 rebounds a game. In addition, she blocked 8.5 shots a game on her way to earning MVP honors. This season, Clavelle could post even more impressive numbers as Jeanerette High School drops down to Class 2A.

“We are very delighted to sign a player of the caliber of Treynell Clavelle,” said LSU head coach Sue Gunter. “A player with her size and mobility is at a premium and we feel fortunate that she has chosen to come to LSU. She should provide us with much needed assistance in the middle and her size and power will be a great addition to our program.”

Initially, Clavelle verbally committed to play at Louisiana Tech in August, but interest from Gunter and the Lady Tigers changed her mind after an official visit.

The Lady Tigers open the 2001-02 season next Tuesday against Grambling State at the Pete Maravich Assembly Center at 7 p.m. LSU, in conjunction with the Greater Baton Rouge Food Bank, is asking fans to bring non-perishable food items to the game. Any person who brings three canned goods will gain free admission. All the food will be donated to the less advantaged just in time for the upcoming holiday season.
