Women’s Tennis Fares Well in SEC Fall Classic

STONE MOUNTAIN, Ga. — LSU women’s tennis player, Amanda Mang, advanced to the championship match of the “B” draw singles tournament of the Southeastern Conference Fall tournament on Sunday here at the Lincoln Tennis Center in Stone Mountain, Ga.

“Amanda turned in a very solid performance this weekend,” said LSU head coach Tony Minnis. “It is quite an accomplishment for a freshman to reach the final of an SEC tournament and she played some outstanding tennis this weekend. She’s had a great fall season and we’re excited about her achievements.”

Mang, the Tigers’ highly-touted freshman from New Orleans, La., recorded four straight-set victories to reach the championship match of the SEC Fall Tournament’s “B” singles draw last weekend.

In Friday’s opening round of competition, Mang dropped Arkansas’ Megan Ferreira, 6-3, 6-2, before earning a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Magda Wojdylo of South Carolina in the round of 16. She then defeated Ole Miss’ Audra Adams, 6-4, 6-2, in her first match on Saturday prior to edging Alex Smith of Georgia, 6-1, 7-6(5) to reach the final.

Sunday’s “B” singles draw championship match pitted LSU’s Mang against South Carolina’s senior Katarina Markovski. Markovski used her three years of SEC experience to beat Mang, 6-3, 6-2.

“Despite losing in the final, we learned what kind of a competitor that Amanda is,” Minnis said. “She never gives up on a match and she fights for every point. Those are the kinds of players that we love to have on our team and she will definitely be an asset for us this season and in the future.”

The SEC Fall Tournament closed out the Lady Tigers’ fall season and the LSU women’s tennis team will next be in action on January 11, as the Lady Tigers travel to Williamsburg, Va., to compete in the William & Mary Invitational.
