Reed Named SEC Offensive Player of the Week

BATON ROUGE — Josh Reed, LSU’s record-setting wide receiver, has been named the Southeastern Conference’s Offensive Player of the Week, the league office announced on Monday.

Reed caught an SEC record 19 passes for a league record 293 yards and one touchdown in LSU’s 35-21 win over Alabama on Saturday. The 19 receptions easily broke the LSU record of 14 held by Wendell Davis against Ole Miss in 1986 and was two better than the previous SEC mark of 17 held by Willie Gosha of Auburn and Keith Edwards of Vanderbilt.

Reed’s 293 yards broke the school-record of 248 held by Todd Kinchen against Mississippi State in 1991, and it bettered the SEC mark of 269 held by Kentucky’s Craig Yeast against Vanderbilt.

Of Reed’s 293 yards receiving, 105 came after the catch.

Reed also broke the LSU record for most 100-yard games in a career as he ran his total to 14, one better than Davis’ 13.

With 293 yards receiving against Alabama, Reed went over the 1,000-yard mark for the second straight season. Reed joins Tennessee’s Joey Kent as the only two receivers in the history of the SEC to have 1,000 yards receiving in more than one season. Kent did it in 1995 and 1996. For the year, Reed has 64 receptions for 1,191 yards. Last year, Reed had 1,127 yards receiving on 64 catches.

In addition to his receiving, Reed finished with 338 all-purpose yards, the second-highest total in LSU history and the third most in SEC history. Reed had 40 yards in kickoff returns and five punt return yards against Alabama.

Kevin Faulk holds the LSU mark with 376 all-purpose yards against Houston in 1996, while Moe Williams of Kentucky holds the SEC record with 429 against South Carolina in 1995.

The SEC Player of the Week honor is the first of Reed’s career.

Arkansas’ Jermaine Petty earned the defensive player of the week honor for his performance in the Razorbacks’ 58-56 seven overtime win over Ole Miss.
