BATON ROUGE — The Ole Miss Rebels dropped four strokes to par on the 54th hole of the tournament to fall from first to third place, giving the UAB Blazers the 2001 Country Club Intercollegiate title in thrilling fashion on Tuesday afternoon in Baton Rouge.
The Rebels counted a birdie, a par, and double and triple bogeys on the par-4, 414-yard 18th hole to fall from 10-under-par to 6-under. UAB won the tournament by shooting a tournament-record 8-under 856, one stroke better than Auburn which finished at 7-under 857.
The 18th hole was the most dificult hole during the three-round event with a 4.35 stroke average.
The tournament host, the LSU Tigers, tied for the day’s third-lowest round with a 1-under 287 to finish in fifth place at 2-under 862 for the three-round event. North Florida was ahead of the Tigers in fourth at 5-under 859.
Individually, UAB’s Graeme McDowell, who tied for seventh in last season’s CCLA, took medalist honors by shooting a 12-under 204 and setting the tournament record by two strokes. On Tuesday, McDowell completed the tournament with a 4-under 204. The previous record was set last season by Alan Moran of LSU, who shot 10-under 206 to take medalist honors during his senior season.
McDowell beat out Auburn’s Lee Williams (9-under 207) and three golfers at 8-under 206 including Ole Miss’ Andrew Medley, the Rebel who triple bogeyed the 18th.
