BATON ROUGE — The LSU softball team chose senior All-America pitcher Britni Sneed and sophomore third baseman Julie Wiese as their team captains for the 2002 season.
“We allow this team to pick their own captains,” said head coach Yvette Girouard. “And in this case, the coaching staff concurs. We feel that these two individuals are the epitome of LSU softball and will lead this team in every positive direction.”
Sneed completed an outstanding junior season with a list of honors for her efforts. Along with being recognized as first-team All American, Sneed was named the Southeastern Conference Player of the Year and the MVP at the SEC Tournament and the NCAA Regional. She completed the season with an LSU record 0.66 ERA and a record of 36-6. Sneed also set the LSU and SEC single-season record for strikeouts with 410.
As a freshman, Wiese tied the LSU single-season record with 12 home runs. She was the fifth Tiger to hit two home runs in a game against Georgia on March 31. Wiese was also named to the Women’s College World Series All-Tournament team after she hit her 12th home run of the season to give LSU the 2-1 win over Iowa and keep the Tigers from elimination.
The Tigers begin their spring season hosting the Tiger Classic at Tiger Park in Baton Rouge on Feb. 8-10. Teams participating in the tournament include Jackson State, DePaul, Northwestern State and Purdue.
