BATON ROUGE — The LSU men’s golf team shot a 9-under-par 279 in the second round on Monday at the ninth-annual Country Club of Louisiana Intercollegiate to finish the day tied for fifth place at 1-under 575 after two rounds with Southeastern Louisiana.

“We just didn’t get it going early, but we finally got it going in the afternoon, and that is just a matter of everything evening out,” said LSU head coach Greg Jones.

The 9-under 279 is the second-lowest score shot at the CCLA in history. LSU holds the record, an 11-under 277 shot last season in the second round. The 277 propelled the Tigers to victory in 2000, winning the tournament by two strokes over Tulsa. LSU went on the shoot a 54-hole record score of 8-under 856 last season.

LSU got off to a slow start on Monday in the first round, shooting an 8-over 296 to stand place 12th after 18 holes. Alabama-Birmingham led the 15-team field after one round, and leads the tournament by one stroke over one day of play.

UAB finished third last season behind LSU and Tulsa. Ole Miss is in second place behind UAB after 36 holes, just one stroke back. North Florida is in third place at five strokes back, and Auburn is fourth, two ahead of LSU and SLU at 3-under.

Junior John Humphries shot a second-round 3-under 69 to finish the day tied for eighth place with Jordan Dempsey of Ole Miss. Humphries shot a 1-under 71 in round one. He is 4-under par after two rounds. Senior Nathan Goulding is in 23rd place at 1-over par with five other golfers. Goulding fired a second-round 2-under 70 after shooting a 3-over 75 in the first round.

Goulding made his LSU debut at the CCLA last season and shot back-to-back 69s to finish eighth at 1-under. The Cohuna, Australia, native is coming off a sixth place finish at the Tennessee Tournament of Champions last week in Knoxville.

“We didn’t play so well in the first round today, so we had to force ourselves a little to get back in the hunt,” said Goulding. “Hopefully we can do the same tomorrow as we did in the second round today.”

Junior Garrett Prather is in 23rd place with his teammate Goulding. Prather shot a 1-under 71 in round two after a 74 in the first round. True freshman Heath West is tied for 35th after firing an impressive 3-under 69 in round two. West lowered his score by nine strokes from round one to two, as he shot a 78 in the first round.

“Heath is going to be a superstar, he is still learning when to be patient and when to be aggressive,” Jones said. “When he learns all that he will lower his scores considerably, because he is a guy who is capable of shooting very low numbers because he is so long and is such a good putter.”

Freshman Tucker Ervin tied for 61st place after shooting a 7-over 151. Neil Self, Jason Horrell, Jeff Riemann, and Chip Lee all participated as individuals for the Tigers on Monday. The best score shot from the foursome was an 11-over 155 by Self.

UAB’s Graeme McDowell and Auburn’s Lee Williams are tied for the individual lead at 8-under par 136. McDowell shot a second-round 6-under 66 after a first-round 2-under 70, and Williams fired a CCLA-record 7-under 65 in the first round to tie for the lead. The previous record was a 6-under 66 shot five times, and most recently by McDowell last season. Williams shot a 2-under 70 in the second round.

Southeastern Louisiana’s Andy Smith is in third place at 7-under par. Smith shot a 7-under 137 and is one back of the co-leaders. North Florida’s Brad Schwartz and Andrew Medley of Ole Miss are tied for fourth place at 6-under.

“I think another round like our second round today would get us near the top tomorrow,” Jones said. “We are not going to be in the last wave, so those guys will be battling each other and hopefully we can put a number on the board early and put some pressure on the last few groups coming in it might could happen.”

LSU’s four individuals will tee off at 7:52 a.m. on Tuesday, and then all five starters will be teed off by 9:12 a.m. The Tigers will be paired with Auburn and Southeastern Louisiana on Tuesday.

LSU is looking for its first tournament victory of the season and its third CCLA title in history. The Tigers won the event in 1993 as well as last season.
