Men’s Golf Finishes Adams Cup With Day’s Best Round

KINGSTON, R.I. — The LSU men’s golf team shot a final-round 5-over-par 285 Wednesday at the Adams Cup of Newport to finish 14th overall.

The Tigers posted the best score of Wednesday’s third and final round, finishing with a total score of 888. Ninth-ranked New Mexico won the eighth-annual tournament by seven strokes over Michigan State, as the Lobos finished at 14-over 854.

However, LSU was left out of the tournament’s top flight due to a uncharacteristic 32-over 312 in the second round.

“If we put the first and third round of the tournament together, then we would have finished in second place behind New Mexico, which is one of the nation’s top teams,” LSU head coach Greg Jones said. “The guys came out today and put the second round behind them and answered the bell.”

LSU was led by junior Garrett Prather, who shot an 11-over 221 and finished tied for 34th. Redshirt freshman Jason Horrell shot a 12-over 222 to finish tied for 38th.

“There is a lot of teaching going on right now with the young players on the team,” Jones said. “Even though John (Humphries) and Garrett (Prather) are out veterans, they’re still quite young as collegiates.”

True freshman Tucker Ervin shot a 14-over 224, including an even-par 70 in the final round. Junior John Humphries shot a 2-over 72 Wednesday and finished tied for 64th with teammate Chip Lee with a 230 total.

LSU head coach Greg Jones has now used eight players in their first two tournaments of the season, including two true freshman and one redshirt freshman.

The Tigers return to action Oct. 15-16 at the Gary Koch/Cleveland Golf Intercollegiate at Tampa, Fla. LSU finished third in a 15-team field last season.
