BATON ROUGE — The LSU volleyball team looks for its third weekend sweep of Southeastern Conference foes this season when it takes on Mississippi State in a Western Division battle on Sunday at 2 p.m. at the Pete Maravich Assembly Center.
The Tigers (11-6, 6-2 SEC) won their fifth straight game against an SEC West team on Friday when it downed Ole Miss, 3-1. The Bulldogs (6-11, 1-7) upset run against division-leading Arkansas fell just short on Friday.
“Mississippi State is a dangerous team,” said LSU coach Fran Flory. “But we have to stay focused on playing our game and controlling what we can control. We’ll need another good performance from Meagan (Davis) to contain them.”
Davis, a two-time All-SEC selection, was outstanding on Friday in recording the first triple-double of her career and the first by an LSU player in over a decade. She registered a career-high 20 kills to go along with her 10 digs and 10 blocks.
Slightly overshadowed by Davis’ performance was the one of Jennifer Hampton who had 14 kills and a match-high 20 digs to go along with a career-high six blocks. It was her team-high fifth double-double of the year.
“I thought Jennifer had a nice match against Ole Miss. She will be a factor for us on Sunday if she can block that way again,” said Flory.
The Tigers and Bulldogs have met once already this season with LSU coming away with a 3-0 victory in Starkville, Miss. LSU has beaten Mississippi State six consecutive times dating back to 1998.
In that match, outside hitters Kyra Lancon had 14 kills en route to a .385 hitting percentage while senior Meghan Bedford notched 12 kills and a .333 hitting percentage.
No Bulldog reached double-figures in kills as Mississippi State hit just .071 for the match, compared to .316 for LSU.
“Offensively, we were really in sync against them earlier this year,” Flory noted. “We did a lot of things well that night, especially in using our outsides.”
