BATON ROUGE — The LSU women’s swimming and diving team will open its 2001 dual-meet season Friday afternoon against Houston at the LSU natatorium.
The meet will begin at 3 p.m. and will feature 13 events, including the 50-yard freestyle, as well as one and three-meter diving. Warmups for the meet will begin at 1:30. The best two relays from each event will count toward final scores. The top three scores from individual events will count.
Other swimming events Friday will be the 200, 100, 1650 and 500 freestyle, as well as the Backstroke, Breaststroke and Butterfly.
Michelle Coryell, a junior from Baton Rouge, and Jamie Watkins, a senior from Jacksonville, Fla., will highlight the diving competition for the Tigers. Watkins and Coryell were named All-Americans in 2001. Watkins earned All-America honors for the second consecutive season. Senior Mandy Leach was a 2000 Olympian for Zimbabwe. The swimmer is a native of Harare, Zimbabwe.
“We are looking forward to getting the season underway”, said LSU head coach Jeff Cavana. “We had a good intrasquad meet a few weeks ago, and our ready to get the regular season started.”
The entire swimming and diving team competed in the 13th-annual Purple and Gold Intrasquad meet Sept. 28 at the natatorium. The Purple team beat the Gold 233-210.
Last season LSU beat Houston 133-94 in Baton Rouge.
